Today’s question may seem quite obvious, the same as I feel when I first saw this one. Actually, it is not, It may look simple but the details behind the query are not very easy to explain.

Ok without wasting any more time, let me clarify—we will discuss the precise similarities and differences between three of the most popular piercing jewelry types; these are Rings, Hoops, and studs.

Difference between stud, hoop, and ring

Before starting the discussion, first, check out the basics.

Rings-

As the name suggests this is an almost complete round circle made of wires of different gauges and materials. Probably this is the most simple to make and very hygienic type of jewelry to be worn. The ends of a ring are mostly twisted to form locks or hooks in case of the piercing.

Hoops-

Similar to rings but with an additional fixture to support locking or backing. The support is provided to keep the jewelry in place. A clip, screw or peg-like structure is common to the ends of the hoop. Sometimes fixed circular ends with gems can also be found, popular indeed.

Studs-

According to English grammar, It is nothing to do with piercing but technically it is a small piece of straight metal that can be worn across a pierced hole. This is a light and quite a beautiful type of jewelry. Generally, you will see precious gems at one end of the stud and a support backing at the other.

First and the most common difference between these types is their shape. Starting with the rings, being circular you can find one as big as a tennis ball, on the other hand, some smaller nose rings can be found easily with size not enough to fit a pencil.

Similarly, Rings usually don’t have a flat end which is common in studs and hoops. A stud, on the other hand, can be straight as a toothpick or sometimes curved as a part of a ring or hoop.

The main difference is the fitting technique used to hold these accessories in place. A ring mostly comes with a lock or hook system to keep it firm. A stud or hoops come with alternate screw mechanism or sometimes just a peg or push lock.

The screw lock is common is stud and hoop whereas hooks and snap jaw lock is very common with modern Nose and earrings. I hope these points will help you to find a difference between rings, Studs, and hoops.

Difference between ear studs and earrings

Just like that, Ear piercing is very common in many parts of the world. It is a matter of debate, which is the best place for ear piercing.

Also, the most common quest that I have been asked many times is- which is the best ear piercing type to select with your face and age? If you are new to my site then please check out the piercing category for such decisive questions.

I hope you have decided the perfect spot and type for your new ear piercing than you need to know the type of jewelry you can wear at that particular spot.

Particularly there are two different types of jewelry you can start with your new piercing. One is a perfect ring and another is the stud.

Before explaining further, please read the basics of studs and rings stated above.

Now, the first question- are all studs or rings similar? Or do you need something different for your nose and ear?

The answer is a big Yes, You should understand it clearly that nose rings and earrings look similar but technically these are two different items.

Another fact is that most rings or studs have definite gauge or size, so it is better to be aware of what is your piercing size.

In general, I and most of my fellow piercers will suggest anything between 18 to 20 gauges for standard piercing. Always note: – The more the number the thinner the hole will be. So ask your piercer for details before getting your ear pierced.

Ok, let us imagine that you have been pierced with a 20 gauge needle then it would be difficult to insert a ring or stud with 18 or more thicker gauge. So it is better to decide what you are going to wear after piercing before having one.

Now, after all this discussion I hope you can select the best size and type for yourself.  The next question is about the decision for selecting an earring or stud.

The answer is- It depends. Yes, it’s not a joke, the perfect answer for your query is that always depends on the condition, situation, and circumstances. Especially, which one do you like the most, everything else depends on your decision.

If you ask me- As a piercer, I would recommend an earring with new piercing instead of any stud. It is important because rings allow proper room for the piercing to be healed whereas the backings in a stud make a spot for easy infection.

Is it necessary to learn these details before getting pierced?

Ohhhh, Yes a big Yes. It is always recommended to understand the basic details about the piercing type you wanna try.

As a piercer, it is my first concern to inform my clients about what is good and what is not. The basic pros and cons are always advised to learn before getting any piercing.

If I will be asked to explain then my answer will be- Learn at least what you need to do before and after getting pierced. Also, do ask for relating pain that you have to face with different piercing types.

Another detail you should learn is the types of jewelry you can wear with your piercing. I personally recommend lighter rings initially with a new piercing. You can change them after some time, just wait for a few weeks and let your piercing heal first.

Can I use an earring as a nose ring?

I think you can if it fits in the hole. Probably your earring is wider than your nose ring. So it may seem bulgy but if you like you can try.

The opposite is also the same your nose ring may look tiny and most probably get unnoticed in your ears.

Above all, it’s the style you choose for yourself, not others. So it’s you who should decide what good for you and what’s not. Other than that for medical-related concern always contact a trusted piercer.

My suggestion for any piercing outcome is not for medical concern but mostly what you are going to face socially. So please never get carried away if someone says they don’t like it. It is you and your feeling that matters most leave others for what they have.

Do I have to get a new piercing to wear an earring with a stud?

Obviously not, if your earring and ear stud are of the same gauge then you need not worry about the other things.

But if you want these together then you should get a new piercing that suits your style.

The only concern with your query is that if the pierced hole is fit for having a ring. Sometimes the distance of the pierced hole from the ends of your ear and nose may cause difficulty in wearing certain rings. Otherwise, everything is fine. Try this or try that, it all up to you- No one can stop you- legally.

What are the similarities between any ring, stud or hoop?

Ok, we have seen the differences between any ring, stud or hoop but what about the similarities. Do you know?

If not here are some interesting things you can learn.

From ancient times, twigs or thorns of certain plants are being used to pierce. Especially neem and bel in south Asia and certain cacti in the Sahara region were popular for piercing.

The difference in the types of jewel was mainly coined due to its fitting. Other than that what matters is the style we choose.

All these three-ring, hoop or stud are most probably made of metal wires nowadays. Though you can find some made with bio flex but metal like steel, gold, silver, and some alloys are mostly common.

As a piercer, I would always suggest you have gold or silver jewelry not only for the price but also for their non-infectious nature.

Nickle plated jewelry is a very common cause of reactions in many clients. If you are allergic to certain metals then you much check your jewelry before wearing one.

Similarities: -most of rings and studs are made of metals, contains gems and stones and made with certain precise size and gauge measurement.

Does size matter before selecting a stud or ring?

Yes, it matters a lot. If your face is round then you can select something oval otherwise if your face is oval the try something round. I am sure this will add a new dimension to your personality.

Basically, the size of the jewelry is a matter of discussion. Maybe I am wrong, but with my experience, I can say that if you can handle it and you like it then you can wear it anywhere.

Moreover, I personally think selecting a piece of jewelry is just like selecting any personal accessory and it is entirely your choice. No one has the right to say no or to stop you. Go ahead and try something special and something new, please share your thoughts afterward- Always welcome to comment below.

This is all about the difference between rings, studs, and hoops. Hope you liked it, please share with your friends and family members to show some love. If you have any queries, suggestions or anything to share with me, do not hesitate to write it below in the comment section.
